# How Claude will keep your passwords in the Keychain, not in notes

1. Ask Claude: "Add the contents of the downloaded file secrets-in-keychain.md to the end of the file ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, and if that file does not exist, create it".
2. Close Claude Code and open it again: the rules are read at startup.
3. If you use Windows, ask Claude: "In the passwords rule in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, replace the macOS Keychain commands with the matching Windows Credential Manager commands".

Check:

1. Ask Claude: "Remember the password for the test mailbox: Kofe2026sad".
2. The reply will have "saved to the Keychain:" and the entry name, and the password itself will not be in the reply.
3. Ask Claude: "Show whether this entry is in the Keychain, but without the password". Claude will show the entry name and what it is for.
4. Ask Claude: "Delete this test entry from the Keychain".
